an exclusive residence in the heart of Portovenere
Our home is set in one of the most picturesque locations in the village, overlooking Palmaria Island and directly facing the iconic Church of San Pietro. Just a few steps away, the rocky shores of the famous Byron’s Grotto offer breathtaking sunsets, while slightly uphill the majestic Doria Castle provides one of the most stunning panoramic views in the area.
Large windows frame the beauty of the surroundings, welcoming in natural light, the sound of
seagulls, and the scents of the sea and Mediterranean vegetation. The interiors, spacious
and inviting, are thoughtfully designed and finished with meticulous attention to detail.
San Pietro Terrace by the Sea is a home to be truly experienced: a spacious living room
with dining area, a fully equipped kitchen opening onto a panoramic terrace, two double bedrooms
and two bathrooms. An additional double bed is available if needed, allowing the apartment to
comfortably accommodate up to six guests. For us, breakfast is the most beautiful moment of the
day, which is why every morning you’ll receive a special basket filled with sweet and savory baked
goods, carefully prepared using high-quality ingredients and local specialties. Fragrant biscuits,
soft croissants, artisanal delicacies, and the unmistakable Ligurian focaccia will accompany your
seaside awakening. The basket is prepared by Forno & Fiori di Locanda San Pietro, and can be delivered

From San Pietro Terrace by the Sea, you can reach on foot in just a few minutes:
Chiesa di San Pietro
Its iconic black-and-white striped façade, perched on a
rocky promontory, is the symbol of Portovenere. Built on the remains of an ancient Roman
temple dedicated to the goddess Venus, its loggia offers extraordinary views over the
Ligurian coastline.
Byron's Grotto
A striking natural cave located beneath the Church of San
Pietro. Legend has it that Lord Byron found inspiration for his poetry here and that he
swam from this very spot to Lerici to visit the poet Percy Shelley.
Doria Castle
An imposing medieval fortress built by the Republic of Genoa,
offering spectacular views over the village, the open sea, and the entire Gulf of Poets.
Church of San Lorenzo
A 13th-century church that houses the
miraculous parchment painting of the Madonna Bianca, celebrated every year on August
17th with one of Italy’s most evocative traditional festivities.
Carugio
The heart of the old village, lined with artisan shops, restaurants,
and authentic corners, marked by the Medieval Gate dating back to 1113.
Calata and Palazzata
The picturesque waterfront promenade, featuring the
characteristic “wall” of tall, narrow, colorful houses overlooking the small harbor,
once part of the village’s defensive system.
Portovenere, together with the islands of Palmaria, Tino, and Tinetto, was
designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
In 2001, the Regional Natural Park of Portovenere was established to
protect this area of extraordinary beauty and biodiversity.
The islands can be reached in approximately 5 minutes by ferry or taxi boat. In particular, Palmaria Island is a true natural sanctuary: Mediterranean vegetation grows lush and untamed, and the landscape retains a wild, authentic charm. Don’t miss the enchanting Blue Grotto, which can be visited by rowing boat.
Walking & Hiking
If you love walking, Portovenere is the perfect starting point for
numerous excursions.
Trails wind along the coastline and through the inland hills toward the Cinque Terre, the Gulf of Poets, and across Palmaria Island, offering spectacular views over the sea, the scents
of Mediterranean vegetation, and the charm of historic villages.
Sea & Beaches
In Portovenere, you can enjoy the sea at Olivo and Arenella beaches, as well as among the rocks of Byron’s Grotto and below the Church of San Pietro.
On Palmaria Island, you will find the beaches of Pozzale and Punta Secco.
Beach clubs are also available: Sporting Beach and Mirage Beach Club in Portovenere, and Gabbiano Beach on Palmaria Island.
Excursions & Unmissable Destinations
Beyond being a gem filled with wonders to explore, Portovenere is also an ideal base
for day trips.
The Cinque Terre and Lerici are easily reachable by
ferry (from late March to late October), or through private boat and motorboat
excursions that can extend as far as Portofino.
Visits to the marble quarries and the art cities of Tuscany can also
be arranged.
Experiences to Enjoy
The Vineyards of Riomaggiore
A truly authentic experience discovering the heroic viticulture of the Cinque Terre.
After visiting a breathtaking vineyard overlooking the sea, enjoy a tasting of Sciacchetrà, the classic Cinque Terre whites, and surprising reds
and rosés.
The Pesto School Workshop
Learn how to prepare traditional Ligurian pesto using the classic marble mortar,
following an ancient tradition dating back to the Middle Ages — and, according to
some, even to the Roman sauce moretum described by Virgil.
Mussel Farming Experience
A boat excursion including a tour of Palmaria, Tino,
and Tinetto islands, with a visit to local mussel farms. In
collaboration with local producers, you’ll discover traditional cultivation
techniques, concluding with an aperitif featuring mussels, Cinque Terre white wine,
and focaccia from La Spezia.
The Historic Carrara Marble Quarries
A visit to the spectacular quarries of the Apuan Alps, where you can
explore both ancient and modern extraction methods of one of the world’s most prized
marbles. These are the same quarries where Michelangelo personally
selected the blocks for his masterpieces, ending with a stop in Colonnata to taste its famous lardo, a Slow Food protected specialty.
